12/6/2016 0 Comments History of the rising sun Kofun Period (300 - 538) Country was united as Yamato Japan as central power (Emperor lead government) was starting to develop. Asuka Period (538-710) Mainland influences were starting to prevail. Chinese ideas were also finding a place in Japan culture. Nara and Heian Periods (710 - 1185) Japan’s capital switched multiple times during this period due to various reasons. Two characteristics that define this time are the Japanization of Chinese influences and the rise of family clans and their struggle for power. Kamakura Period (1192 - 1333) Family clans had taken power away from the government officials in Kyoto. New forms of Buddhism were starting to be developed. Samurai were the dominant social class. Mongols invaded multiple times but failed. Emperor regained power at the end of the period. Muromachi Period (1333 - 1573) This period contains multiple struggles for power and civil war between Northern and Southern courts. Advances in agriculture markets social classes and towns were happening Christianity was brought over by Portuguese traders Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1573 - 1603) This period brought about the Japanese people under one central power again through force. Christian and some Buddhist persecution was common. Edo Period (1603 - 1867) The first part of the period continued the persecution of Christianity but also encouraged outside trade. Thoughts on outside trade changed however during a transition of power and outside trade was very limited/ almost completely cut off This caused little interaction with the outside world till some countries heavily encouraged Japan to open trade back up. Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) Japan were trying to gain international respect during this period They borrowed and modeled multiple foreign ideas to shape such things as their government, education system, military, technology, industries etc. Taisho and Early Showa Period (1912 - 1945) Japan was a part of the Allied forces for WWI but played a minor role Japan joined the League of Nations but left during WWII Racial tension between America and Japan was strong After WWI Japan’s economy declined Japan started wars with China and the U.S. and joined the Axis power Japan attacked Pearl Harbor near the end of the period and was later defeated by the U.S. after a massive assault by air on Japan Post War History (since 1945) Japan was devastated after WWII Allied forces occupied Japan and redesigned Japan’s entire societal structure Censorship was heavy and past Japanese officials lost all of their power Relations with past enemies eventually became better and Japan’s economy started to flourished Parental advisory there is some lanuage in this video.
